Clara knew two things when she started MMHS as a freshman this year; she wanted to expand her circle of friends and she wanted to run cross country. Machias Memorial High School fit both bills. Having homeschooled her entire life, Clara was looking for a small school with a family like atmosphere where she wouldn’t be overwhelmed. She wanted to meet new people and try new activities but she didn’t want to get lost in the crowd. “It was easier to make friends than I thought”, states Clara, “I am enjoying hanging out and doing things besides just classes.”
Clara was also looking for academic challenge and needed a somewhat customized program to accommodate her former homeschooling schedule. Mr. Leavitt worked with Clara in the summer to help evaluate her academic level and make sure she got the right classes. She is taking a typical freshman schedule including Health, Physical Education, English 9, Explorations in Science, Geography, Algebra 1, Culinary Arts, and Art. Her favorite subject is Art with Mrs. Williams and she hopes to try Chorus next semester.
Though Clara is humble about her experience at MMHS, she has added to the student body in a dramatic way. On the cross country field she is setting new records for the Bulldogs, having come in first in almost every race. According to Principal Leavitt, she has a great attitude about everything that rubs off on others. Her strong work ethic, developed on the family farm and blueberry fields, is keeping her on track and helping her meet her goals.
