Maine Principals' Association Cancels Spring Season. Please see press release below.

    April 9, 2020 | For Immediate Release

Contact Person: Mike Burnham, Executive Director, Maine Principals’ Association

It is with regret that the Maine Principals’ Association announces the cancellation of the 2020 spring athletic season. Please know that this was not a decision that was taken lightly, but one that the leadership at the MPA felt necessary to help support the recommendations from our Governor’s Office, the Maine CDC, and Commissioner Makin, and the Department of Education, that schools across the state not come back in session and provide remote and distance learning opportunities for the remainder of the school year. We understand the importance that these athletic and performing arts programs play in the lives of students, their families, and their communities, but also recognize that these education-based activities are a part of the overall educational experience and at this time of uncertainty to adhere with the recommendations of staying at home, maintaining social distancing, and avoiding face-to-face instruction and large group gatherings, is crucial for us to persevere.

We want to recognize the efforts of the hard-working dedicated educators across the entire state as they provide distance learning opportunities to students in Pre-K through 12th grade and to thank them for their work during this COVID-19 crisis. We also want to recognize the important role that coaches and advisors play in the lives of our young people and would encourage them to continue to reach out to their team members to provide the emotional support that so many students need during this time of uncertainty.

The Maine Principals’ Association is a professional association representing Maine’s K-12 principals, assistant principals, and career and technology center directors. The Association dates to 1921 and focuses its work on promoting the principalship, supporting principals as educational leaders, and promoting and administering interscholastic activities in grades 9-12.

    School Closure Letter to Parents

    March 16, 2020

Machias Schools have made the decision to close school until March 27.  This presents a challenge to continuing the education of our students.  To meet this challenge a strong partnership between school and home must occur.

Today, teachers and staff worked on developing a plan for continued learning.  Some teachers will be sending assignments home via the US Postal Service, some using email, and others using distance learning platforms like Google Classroom.  Each teacher will contact your student to notify them of their mode of delivery.

A crucial part of communicating with students remotely is technology.  Students will need a way to receive their assignments.  The school will use the student’s school issued email.  I will have a school representative call each parent on Tuesday to make sure you have your student’s user name and password, ask about Internet access, and arrange a time for you to pick up items from the school if necessary.

It will be the student’s responsibility to check for assignments, complete them, and return them to their teacher.  Parents should communicate with their students the importance of doing so.  Students who do not complete assignments during the closure will be required to make them up when the school reopens.

If your student is having difficulties receiving, completing, or submitting assignments please contact the school immediately.  If your student becomes stressed or anxious about school or the health crisis, please call the school for assistance.  We have guidance counselors and staff available to talk with students.  We want to help your student be successful during this difficult time.

During the closure parents of Machias Schools students may pick up lunches in the RMG lobby between 10:00 and 12:00, Monday through Friday, beginning on March 17.  Breakfast for the following morning will be included with each lunch.  No need sign up, just show up!  Individuals other than staff members will not be allowed past the lobby.   Thank you to Machias Schools Food Services crew and additional volunteers for facilitating this valuable service to our community.

Machias Memorial High School is committed to educating our students during this closure. By working together we can make sure our students have a continued and meaningful education.

Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.  I can be reached at the above email or at 207-263-4999.  Contact me anytime.
